The article examines the types of economy of the Kazakhs of the Tarbagatai district, analyzes the fishing industry of the villages located near Lake Zaysan. It presents the species of fish living in Lake Zaysan, its flora and fauna, the fishing profession of local Kazakhs, as well as their fishing gear and methods. The purpose of the article: to analyze the development of the fishing industry of the Tarbagatai Kazakhs, its seasonal features and similarities with fishing in other regions. As a result, the activities of fishing complexes located on the shores of Lake Zaysan, their production indicators, as well as the formation of the first professional Kazakh fishermen are presented. The historical foundations and current state of the fishing industry of the Tarbagatai Kazakhs are analyzed, its place in the traditional economic system is determined. In addition, the tools and methods necessary for traditional fishing are compared. The relationship between fishermen and farmers. It was studied whether farmers are engaged in fishing in winter depending on the season. In conclusion, it should be noted that fishing occupies a significant place in the traditional economic system of the Tarbagatai Kazakhs. This marked the beginning of the development of fishing on Lake Zaysan and the Irtysh River. It has been established that the basis of the traditions of the fishing complexes that developed on the Zaysan River in the second half of the 19th century was fishing.
