Studying of the issues of Hunnic army and military culture

Abstract

The history of the Huns in Europe in the fourth and fifth centuries marks the beginning of an essentially qualitative stage in the history of Eurasia. In addition to wars and migrations, it is also an example of the multifaceted interaction of the Great Steppe and the West, the synthesis of traditions and cultures, which had numerous consequences, which in turn influenced the formation of a qualitatively new civilization and social relations. The data of modern archaeological excavations and interdisciplinary research indicate a fairly high level of development of crafts, trade and military art. The purpose of this article is to study the issues of the number of Hunnic army and the military art of the Huns. The rarest written sources on the periods of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages were used in the article in the original Latin, Greek, Early Germanic and Scandinavian languages. These are, first of all, the chronicles of Ammianus Marcellinus, Marcellinus Comitus, Orosius, Jordan, Priscus of Pania, and others. At the same time, we make extensive use of materials from modern archaeological excavations and interdisciplinary research, which attest to a fairly high level of development of crafts, trade, military art and other aspects of the social development of Hunnic society.
