Abstract

In the field season of 2019, the Turgay team of the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology conducted
an exploratory study of the wintering of Akhmet Baytursynov’s family – Mashen. For the first
time, the archaeological study of the area was conducted in 2016 by A.Z. Beisenov. The site is located
on the shores of the Ulyjylanshyk River in the Jangildin District of the Kostanay Region. As a result of
this work, the preserved ruined remains of several structures, forming a complex of objects, and related
to the concepts of life and death, were revealed. The complex includes the remains of residential and
utility buildings, as well as objects associated with funeral rite. The closer acquaintance with the site
raises the question posed in the title of the article, as the plates installed on the site are missing the
name Mashen. The article discusses the possibility of museumification of these objects. Currently, in the
national science, there is a positive trend in the study of the modern history sites. Archaeological, systematic
research into the Kazakh winterings is of major importance, in particular in addressing the issues
of economic development of the Steppe, settlement, environmental adaptation. The implementation
of the museumification of the “Mashen” complex is specifically topical at present. The development of
the museum should involve not only the departments responsible for science, culture, architecture, but
those dealing with the management of motorways, air routes, bridge construction, telecommunications.
