Abstract

Battle of Tours, also known as the Battle of Poitiers occurred on October 10 in 732 year in the vicinity of the city of Tours, near the border between the Frankish kingdom and then independent Aquitaine. In the battle faced franksuie forces under the leadership of Avstraziyan mayor of the palace of Charles Martel and the Arab forces of the Umayyad Caliphate under the command of Abdur – Rahman ibn Abdullah, Governor General of Al – Andalusia. The Franks won in the battle, Abdur – Rahman ibn Abdullah was killed, and Martel subsequently disseminated their influence further to the south. Chronicles of the IX century, interpreted the battle as a sign of God’s favor to Charles, gave him the nickname « Hammer » (Martelus). Details of the battle, including its exact location and the number of fighting can not be inferred from the surviving sources; although, according to legend, the Frankish troops won the battle without cavalry.
