Abstract

This article presents the results of comprehensive archaeological research at the medieval settlement of Koyshyman, located in the Moinkum district of Zhambyl Region, in the lower reaches of the Shu River. The site, known from historical legends and written sources, has recently been recognized as an important monument associated with the Kazakh Khanate. Reconnaissance and excavations revealed architectural remains and cultural layers, which were analyzed and compared with laboratory data.

Findings indicate that the settlement was originally founded during the Golden Horde period and later played a significant role in the regional political and economic system of the Kazakh Khanate. The study also provides previously unpublished information on the settlement’s spatial layout, planning system, and historical-topographical features.

The research was carried out by the University Archaeological Expedition of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University under M. Eleuov, within the framework of Zhambyl Region heritage protection initiatives, on the occasion of the 560th anniversary of the Kazakh Khanate. Survey materials from the 19th–20th centuries and modern investigations were also utilized to contextualize the site’s historical and scientific significance.
