HISTORICAL PARALLELS IN THE STUDY OF KAYUM NASYRI’S LEGACY: A REVIEW OF I. K. ZAGIDULLIN’S MONOGRAPH THE GREAT TATAR ENLIGHTENER KAYUM NASYRI (KAZAN, 2024)
Abstract
The monographic study by Professor Ildus Kotdusovich Zagidullin, titled "The Great Tatar Enlightener Kayum Nasyri" (Kazan, 2024), is dedicated to the study of one of the most intriguing periods in the history of the Turkic-Muslim peoples of the Russian Empire — the second half of the 19th century. This was a time when national enlighteners emerged on the historical stage — intellectuals who combined elements of traditional and modernized worldviews and strove for the cultural advancement of their peoples. Among them are the Tatar enlightener Kayum Nasyri (1825–1902) and the Kazakh Ibragim [Ibray] Altynsarin (1841–1889), whose activities unfolded almost simultaneously and under similar socio-political conditions within the Russian Empire.
